Discovering the azulejo cities

Portugal told through tiles

A journey through the azulejos in Portugal: between history, colors and tradition

We lived in Portugal for four months, precisely in Magoito, a small fishing village 10 km from Sintra. We fell in love with this land for its contrasts: from the wild nature of the ocean to the cities rich in architectural details. And among these details, what fascinated us the most were the azulejos, the painted ceramic tiles that cover buildings, stations, churches and even the interiors of private homes.

A journey among the azulejos in Portugal is an immersion in a unique art form that tells the history of the country through intricate decorations and bright colors.

But what are the Azulejos of Portugal in practice?

The name Asulejos comes from Arabic and means “polished stone”: it is a ceramic tile, traditionally square in shape, decorated with different motifs, from floral to sacred, although the predominant one is geometric.

In Portugal it is difficult not to see them, wherever you are: azulejos cross styles and languages of all eras and brighten up every trip or excursion.

The True Story of Azulejos in Portugal

The history of azulejos in Europe actually begins in Spain, at the time of the Arab invasion, but it is only from the sixteenth century onwards that this type of decoration practically spread also in Portuguese lands. At the beginning they were simple structures with neutral tones and sober geometric lines, but when Manuel I of Portugal visited Seville he brought the idea back home, forever linking the azulejos, increasingly complex and elaborate, to the culture of the place.

The Portuguese began to use this type of decoration to tell even very complex stories, create works of devotion, pay homage to their own traditions. After the terrible earthquake of 1755, which destroyed a good part of Lisbon, during the reconstruction of the city the Manueline style was replaced by the Pombaline style – named after the Marquis of Pombal – and the azulejos also changed their appearance, with an authentic explosion of color that has not stopped even in more recent years.

Why are azulejos blue?

It seems that the predominance of blue and white found in the vast majority of azulejos is due to the influence of Chinese vases from the Ming period.

But let’s continue with our article: here is where to see the most beautiful azulejos in an itinerary that passes through the cities that are symbols of this Portuguese tradition.

Lisbon: the capital of azulejos

Portuguese legends and traditions told through azulejos

Portugal is a land of ancient stories and fascinating traditions, many of which are passed down through azulejos, which are not just decorations, but real visual stories. In addition to the legend of the Rooster of Barcelos, here are other iconic traditions that characterize the country and that are often found in the motifs of azulejos.

The Rooster of Barcelos: Symbol of Justice and Fortune

The legend of the Barcelos Rooster is one of the best known in Portugal. It is said that a pilgrim on his way to Santiago de Compostela was unjustly accused of theft and sentenced to death. Before his execution, he asked to speak to the judge and, seeing a roast rooster on the table, exclaimed: “That rooster will crow to prove my innocence!”.

The judge laughed, but when the rooster came to life and crow, he realized his mistake and ran to stop the execution. The pilgrim was saved and continued on his journey. Today, the Barcelos Rooster is a symbol of luck and hope, and is often found painted on azulejos, ceramics and souvenirs throughout the country.

Queen Saint Isabel and the Miracle of the Roses

Another beloved figure in Portugal is Saint Isabel of Aragon, the country’s queen in the 14th century. According to legend, Isabel used to bring bread to the poor, but King Dinis, annoyed by her generosity, forbade her to do so.

One day, while she was carrying some food hidden in her cloak, the king stopped her and asked her what she was carrying. She replied “roses,” and when she opened her cloak, the bread had miraculously transformed into a bouquet of roses. This miracle is often depicted in the azulejos of Portuguese churches, especially in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova in Coimbra.

The Saias Silks of Nazaré: the seven skirts of the women of the sea

Nazaré is famous for its giant waves and for the women who still wear the traditional Sete Saias (Seven Skirts). This tradition dates back to the fishermen’s wives who, waiting for their husbands to return from the sea, would cover themselves with several layers of skirts to protect themselves from the cold on the beach.

Today, this dress has become a symbol of Portuguese culture and is often depicted in the azulejos that decorate the houses of Nazaré.

The Feast of São João in Porto: A Night of Fires and Hammers

São João is one of the craziest and most characteristic festivals in Portugal, celebrated in Porto on the night of June 23. During this festival, tradition dictates that people gently hit their heads with plastic hammers and throw bright lanterns into the sky.

This festival is linked to the cult of Saint John the Baptist, but has pagan roots that celebrate the summer solstice. The azulejos of Porto’s churches often depict religious scenes related to São João, while in the historic districts you can find murals and tiles with images of the festival.

Lisbon's Fado Houses: The Song of the Portuguese Soul

Fado is traditional Portuguese music, a melancholic song that tells of nostalgia, the sea and lost loves. It is said to have originated among sailors and the women who waited for them in the Alfama and Mouraria neighborhoods of Lisbon.

Many fado houses have walls decorated with azulejos depicting musicians and singers, making this tradition even more visible in the streets of the capital.

The Moliceiro Boats of Aveiro: Floating Art

Aveiro is known as the Venice of Portugal for its canals and the characteristic Moliceiro boats, decorated with hand-painted azulejos. These paintings often tell satirical or romantic stories and are a unique example of the use of azulejos in popular art.

Walking along the main canal of Aveiro, you can see the facades of the houses decorated with bright ceramics, making the city a little gem for azulejo lovers.

Conclusion: a journey through art, history and tradition

A journey through the azulejos in Portugal is much more than just an artistic discovery. Each tile tells a story, each color represents a tradition and each city has a unique piece to offer.
