First off, this island is already relatively affordable, but like anywhere in the world, you can find attractions and accommodations at all price points. Here, we want to show you what to see in Srilanka for free.
Personally, I believe there are places so unique in the world that you should buy the ticket without a second thought, like the entrance to Sigiriya Rock. As of today, the updated price to visit Sigiriya is $30 per person (for the latest price, visit the official website). There’s also the option to visit only the Sigiriya Museum for about $5, but my advice is to get the full ticket because the gardens and the rock are the main attractions here, and even though there are many steps to climb, it’s absolutely worth it! When we travel, we always have a daily budget of 50€, and being a family of four, it’s not easy to stick to it. Some days we spend more, but we always balance it out with other days, ensuring our weekly average never exceeds 400€ (all-inclusive).

I know what I’m about to say isn’t ideal for a blog about traveling with kids, but here’s a clarification: the ticket price to enter the Temple of the Tooth currently exceeds 20€ per person. However, the ticket is required only for entering the inner part of the temple; you can choose not to buy it and still enjoy the equally beautiful and free surroundings.
If you enter through the secondary entrance, you can avoid the entrance fee. You can still visit several temples without entering the main Temple of the Tooth, where there’s always a queue anyway.

For us, market lovers, it was a wonderful discovery: Giulia and I would never have left the initial area where buses from all over Sri Lanka arrive; a real folk parade of the most original and colorful vehicles.

A final tip for staying in the city, which applies to the rest of Sri Lanka: if you want to save on accommodation, avoid choosing places in the city center, opt for something on the outskirts and you’ll notice a decent saving. You’ll spend a bit more on transportation, but remember that in Sri Lanka, as in all of Asia, every purchase is based on negotiation; assuring the driver you’ll call them again the next day will guarantee you a discount (obviously, you’ll have to keep your promise the next day).
Tips for Saving During the Trip
To save even more, consider the option of street food, rich in local flavors at affordable prices. Opt for accommodations in locally-run guesthouses and take advantage of public transportation to save on travel costs. Remember, you can’t visit Sri Lanka without riding one of its colorful trains.
