Travel Abruzzo with kids

Get Inspired by Our Itinerary

As the wife of an Abruzzese, I must admit that I had never looked at this region as such a precious tourist destination before. It is practically impossible to visit all of Abruzzo with kids in one tour due to its variety of landscapes and attractions, but with the valuable help of Matteo, I’ll try to choose the must-see places.

Rocca Calascio, the Queen of Abruzzo

I’ll start with what I consider the most beautiful place in all of Abruzzo. A postcard-perfect destination that looks like a painting. At the top, street artists often perform, creating a surreal atmosphere.

Rocca Calascio Castle is one of the most enchanting places in Abruzzo, sure to captivate the kids in your family. Located at an altitude of 1,460 meters, it overlooks the Navelli Valley and offers spectacular panoramic views. The castle has been used as a location for several films, including “The Name of the Rose” and “Ladyhawke.”

Stiffe Caves

Formed geologically about 600,000 years ago, the famous Stiffe Caves offer a tourist route of about 700 meters. An unexpected world, on the border between reality and fantasy, with enormous stalactites and stalagmites, black lakes, and impressive light and shadow plays, as well as impetuous watercourses.

Lake Scanno, a Must-Visit in Abruzzo with Kids

A charming, romantic village that seems asleep under the green pine mountains, with a blue lake at its feet: this is Scanno, “the pearl of Abruzzo.”

Its crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding mountains, creating an enchanting landscape. Here, you can take a walk along the shore, rent a boat, or have a picnic with a view of the lake.

Costa dei Trabocchi

In the province of Chieti, with its suggestive views, rugged coves, and pebbly beaches, known as the Costa dei Trabocchi for its scenic fishing platforms.

San Vito Chietino

Known as the “town of broom,” San Vito Chietino is one of those unique places that make up the Costa dei Trabocchi. Between Ortona and Fossacesia, this small village is perched on a rock spur, offering breathtaking views of the entire Adriatic coast of Abruzzo.

Punta Penna

The characteristic of this beach is its pristine state, with golden sand and crystal-clear water where you can see the seabed.

San Bartolomeo in Legio

A place to listen to nature and the surrounding silence, in a setting that is also impressive for its architecture. It is a hermitage built into a rock spur at an altitude of 700 meters.

Campo Imperatore, the little Tibet in Abruzzo

A remote and wild corner of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. The plateau is nicknamed “Little Tibet” for its landscape resemblance to the Tibetan plateau.

Ski Resorts, the Best Places in Abruzzo for Kids to Enjoy the Slopes

Abruzzo certainly does not lack ski lifts; in fact, in the winter period, you can choose between:

  • The fashionable Roccaraso, which now rivals the Alpine ski resorts.
  • The traditional Ovindoli and the entire Campo Felice area, perfect for beginners. Here, time seems to stand still, and you immediately feel like you are in a soap bubble where days pass slowly.
  • Rivisondoli.
  • Letto Mannoppello, a unique location where you can best experience simplicity and respect for the mountains; values that are beginning to be lost in the northern Italian chains.

Do you agree with me that Abruzzo is a perfect destination for both adults and kids?
