Australia: The Journey of Our Lifetime
Sydney, the Moral Capital
Australia is the journey of a lifetime for us. It’s not easy to describe these places on the other side of the world; Australia undeniably marks the journey of our lives, the starting point that changed our destiny.
We’ve visited Sydney at different times in our lives, even before we knew each other, but what fascinated us both was the beauty of its beaches, despite being in one of the country’s largest cities.
It’s unthinkable not to take a walk to the Opera House, the emblem of the city and indeed all of Australia. Although Sydney is not the political capital of the country, it is the “moral” capital, and this theater, along with the Harbour Bridge, are must-see destinations when visiting the city.
The Botanical Gardens also offer a pleasant alternative walk.
A ferry trip to nearby Manly, a peaceful and harmonious Sydney suburb, is another must. Manly boasts some of the best surfing spots.
Another essential stop in Sydney is Bondi Beach and nearby Coogee. This paradise corner next to the city offers a must-do walk connecting the continent’s two most famous beaches.
Melbourne: Europe's Touch in Australia
Melbourne, the most “European” city in Australia, is a melting pot of different cultures and especially art. Melbourne stands out for its focus on the arts.
St. Kilda offers sun, beaches, longboards, local bars, and restaurants. It’s the Australia we all expect, and it doesn’t disappoint. St. Kilda is an alternative, young, and trendy neighborhood.
Fitzroy’s Brunswick Street is a must-see in Melbourne for its rock and vintage atmosphere. Brunswick St. is the creative hub of the city, home to art lovers and flea markets like the Rose Street Artist Market, where you can buy handmade crafts, clothes, shoes, pins, fabrics, and even get a haircut.
When talking about art in Australia, it’s all about contemporary art. Everything is in constant evolution, and although Australia is one of the oldest continents, the only truly ancient parts are the outback and Aboriginal culture. The cities are temples of modernity. Melbourne is the heart of contemporary and street art in Australia, and you can always find street art in various city neighborhoods.
Gold Coast
What to see on the Gold Coast? Well, more about which beaches not to miss because there isn’t much else to do.
My favorite area is definitely the southern part from Palm Beach to Coolangatta, passing through Kirra and Currumbin with its river mouth perfect for a bit of SUP and a break from the ocean waves.
Surfer Paradise is more about checking it off your list rather than its beauty. It’s an extremely touristy spot where you can’t miss taking photos of skyscrapers right on the beach.
Byron Bay, HOME
But why do we call Australia the journey of our lives?
Writing this part was perhaps the most challenging task of the entire site; it’s unthinkable to encapsulate everything to see and do in Byron Bay, where we lived for three years, in just a few lines. For us, Byron Bay is home, and it’s here that Australia truly enchanted us, defining the journey of our lives.
What I can say is that Byron Bay, and even more so its hinterland, is something to live and discover; it’s a state of mind to reach.
When I first arrived in this community, I looked at Matteo and said, “My kids will grow up here”… I didn’t know then that my kids would also be his.
But let’s go in order. Where to start???
A walk to the lighthouse, the easternmost point of Australia (and thus the furthest from Italy), is a must. From the top, you can see dolphins, and if you’re lucky, some whales. Descending, you’ll reach Tallows Beach on one side, perfect for experienced surfers, and The Pass on the other, ideal for beginners. (A tip: be careful, a beginner on a surfboard can be really dangerous).
For the sunset, a must-see is the sun salute organized by the locals every evening on Main Beach (in three years living there, we didn’t miss a single one).
Nearby towns you must visit include:
- Mullumbimby: A small hippy town where you’ll meet the most interesting and colorful people of your life.
- Brunswick: A peaceful town at the river’s mouth, where you can witness amazing sunrises.
- Bangalow: On top of a hill, a tiny residential center rich in vintage shops and educational farms.
- Lennox Head: A few kilometers south, still on the coast, where perfect waves break for real surfers.
How long should you stay in Byron? The answer is simple:
AS LONG AS YOU CAN!
