What to do in Almeria with kids? If you’re looking for a unique experience in Andalusia with kids, you’re in the right place.

When we arrived in Almeria, we quickly realized that this stop in Andalusia was as underrated as it was fascinating. We stayed for a week in San Jose, in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, and although the first impression was not the best, the area managed to surprise us positively.

Traveling by car, we arrived via the main road and found ourselves driving for several kilometers through the famous, and sadly, plastic greenhouses of Almeria. A desolate landscape that did not bode well. But after that first impact and passing the greenhouses, we immersed ourselves in a wonderful area with breathtaking landscapes.

Here’s what to see in Almeria with kids, a destination that definitely deserves to be explored with the same enthusiasm as all the other areas of Andalusia.

Almeria offers many activities perfect for families. Here are some of the best things to do in Almeria with kids:

Explore the Alcazaba of Almeria

The Alcazaba of Almeria is an imposing fortress overlooking the city. Kids will love exploring the walls, gardens, and towers, feeling like little knights and princesses. It’s a perfect place to discover a piece of history in a fun and interactive way.

Although it is considered a fascinating testament to the Arab rule in the Iberian Peninsula, the Alcazaba of Almeria does not have the charm that characterizes the Alhambra of Granada or the Giralda of Seville. You won’t admire the wonderful decorations that characterize the buildings of the Alhambra, but only the ruins of the ancient palaces of the Arab rulers. For this reason, the visit is short (we spent just over an hour inside the Alcazaba), and entry is free.

The Alcazaba of Almeria follows these schedules:

  • From September 16 to March 31, Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sunday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
  • From April 1 to June 30, Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm and Sunday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
  • From July 1 to September 15, Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm and Sunday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
  • Closed all year on Mondays.

Almeria’s historic center is rich in attractions. You can visit the cathedral, take a tour of the local markets, and discover hidden corners of the city. It’s an ideal place for a relaxing walk, with many opportunities to stop and taste some local specialties. For us, strolling through historic centers is the best part of visiting a city, and Almeria did not disappoint. It is a lively and very folkloric city, and we stumbled upon a medieval market where all participants were dressed in theme: a unique atmosphere.

Roquetas de Mar is another ideal beach destination for families. The beaches are clean and well-equipped, and there are many water activities to entertain kids.

Visit Mojácar Pueblo

Mojácar Pueblo is a picturesque white village that looks like it’s straight out of a postcard. Its winding streets, white houses, and breathtaking views make it perfect for a day of exploration.

It is a very important seaside resort in Andalusia, where millions of tourists go on vacation every year. This small town is located between the Sierra Cabrera and the Mediterranean coast. It is very popular during the summer, especially among Spaniards who prefer to spend weekends here enjoying the beach and sea. We stayed for 3 months in the summer, fascinated by the complete absence of foreign tourists: a perfect place to immerse yourself in the most authentic Spain.

The best way to explore Almeria and its surroundings is by car. The roads are well-maintained, and there are good signs. Also, having a car gives you the flexibility to move around at your own pace and explore less touristy areas.

What is the best time to visit Almeria with kids?

The province of Almería is the driest and sunniest in the entire Iberian Peninsula, so the least suitable time to visit is summer when temperatures, especially inland, can reach even 50°C. The best times to spend a stay in Almería are springand autumn, when temperatures range between 20 and 30°C.

The low-cost airline Ryanair connects Milan Malpensa airport with Almeria, which is located a few kilometers outside the city center. There are two flights a week (Tuesday and Saturday) from March to November. The route is very economical, especially in the low season, that is, in spring and autumn, so I recommend taking advantage of it to have the opportunity not only to visit Andalusia with kids.

Alternatively, if you are by car, Almeria is right on the road that connects all the most beautiful beaches in southern Spain. Remember that if you want to leave Italy by car, there is always the ferry option from Genoa, Civitavecchia, or Olbia that in one night takes you directly to Barcelona, ​​saving a lot of time. (It is also an extremely economical option as the route with a car and cabin cost us only 400€, an amount that would never have been enough to cover accommodation, fuel, and highway tolls)
