Mojacar, the Village of Walt Disney
A Magical Destination for Families
Mojacar is located in the Spanish province of Almeria, on the Costa de Almeria. The charming, Moorish-origin center, which forms the oldest part of the town, is perched on a hill overlooking 17 km of pristine beaches. From afar, the town appears as a traditional Andalusian village clinging to the hillside.
We tak about
ToggleNestled between the mountains of the Sierra Cabrera and the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean, Mojacar is the largest and most popular tourist center in this southeastern corner of Spain.
The town is truly unique, with its whitewashed ancient buildings, a labyrinth of narrow, cobblestone streets and alleys, and hidden romantic courtyards. The historic center also offers magnificent views of the mountains, the sea, and the nearby Tabernas Desert.
Historical Background of Mojacar, Discover Everything You Need to Know About Andalusia with Children
The origins of Mojacar date back to 4000 years ago (the Bronze Age), but the Andalusian center’s peak coincides with the Moorish occupation. The Moors defended the town against Christian armies for hundreds of years until King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella conquered it in the late 15th century.
Mojacar remains deeply attached to its Moorish heritage, symbolized by its ancient fortress and the ubiquitous Mudéjar-style architecture, which evokes an Arabesque atmosphere at every street corner. According to a law passed in 1987, the unique architecture of these places will be preserved for future generations and for the joy of many visitors.
Visiting Mojacar, you will notice a symbol painted on many of the houses in the historic center, depicting a stylized man called the Indalo Man, an ancient icon of the province of Almeria found in Neolithic cave paintings in the Letreros Caves, in Velez Blanco. The icon is traditionally endowed with magical powers, said to protect the area and the houses from storms and the evil eye.

The Legend of Walt Disney and Mojacar
According to a local legend, Walt Disney was born in Mojacar. The story goes that Disney’s father, during one of his trips to Andalusia, had a relationship with a local woman, from whom Walt was born.
The mother, a certain Isabella of humble origins, fled the village to hide her pregnancy, a real scandal at the time as it occurred out of wedlock; she moved to Chicago where she gave her son up for adoption to the neighboring family: the Disneys.
Several times American officials came to Mojacar to look for the document certifying Walt Disney’s birth, but they always returned empty-handed as many documents from that era were lost after the war.
The lack of this document places this story somewhere between legend and truth: on one hand, Walt Disney himself denies having Spanish and such humble origins, on the other hand, many coincidences and an entire village claim the opposite. Fueling this legend is also the fact that no birth certificate of Walt Disney has ever been found even in America.
Even though there is no concrete evidence, this legend makes Mojacar even more magical and fascinating.

Where to Stay in Mojacar
We lived in a nearby village to Mojacar for several months: Palomares. Mojacar is quite expensive compared to our standards, but still has affordable prices when compared to the cost of accommodation in Italy by the sea in summer. The average apartment costs €70 per night for 4 people, so for a vacation, it is certainly a destination to consider.
If your budget is lower, however, I recommend doing as we did: stay a few kilometers away in Palomares or Villaricos, where you will surely find cheaper prices without losing quality. For more tips on how to save on travel, check out my dedicated article.
