The history and legends of Lake Scanno

A visit to Lake Scanno with kids isn’t just about nature; it’s also a journey through time, filled with fascinating history and legends that can spark your little ones’ curiosity.

The geological formation of Lake Scanno

Let’s start with the “geographical” story of how Lake Scanno was formed. The lake came into existence about 3,000 years ago, after a massive landslide from Mount Genzana. This geological event created one of the most striking lakes in Abruzzo. However, to really capture your kids’ attention, don’t forget to tell them the magical legends surrounding this lake!

The legend of King Battifolio and the creation of Lake Scanno

According to legend, King Battifolio, with the help of the wizard Bailardo, made the lake appear during a battle against the Romans to stop their advancing army. This captivating story is perfect for engaging your kids’ imagination, letting them picture warriors and spells, making their experience at the lake even more exciting.

The legend of the fairy Angioina

Another legend tells of the brave fairy Angioina, who was admired by the powerful sorcerer Pietro Baialardo. To fulfill all of his desires, the sorcerer ordered her kidnapping, but the fairy, as beautiful as she was courageous, managed to escape her captors. Using a spell, she conjured Lake Scanno beneath their feet, causing them to drown.

What to do at Lake Scanno with kids

Lake Scanno with kids offers a variety of activities that can make your trip a memorable adventure. Here are some of the best options for a fun-filled day surrounded by nature.

The Heart Trail at Lake Scanno

The Heart Trail can be started from two different points, both well-marked and easy to find. One is longer and more challenging, while the other is much shorter with less elevation gain.

The most scenic starting point is near Lake Scanno, located close to the bike rental and souvenir shop. It is well-marked, so you won’t have any trouble finding it. This trail passes through a small forest, providing plenty of shade in the summer. As you walk along, you’ll come across beautiful panoramic views of the lake. Simply follow the signs for “Sentiero del Cuore” or the red and white trail markers. The total walking time for this trail is about 45-50 minutes, not including stops for photos. The trail from the lake is 2.1 kilometers long with an elevation gain of 289 meters.

The shorter starting point is in the village of Scanno, which is a bit harder to locate. The starting point is at the junction of Viale della Pineta and Via Domenico di Rienzo. You can park your car here and continue along the uphill road, which is reserved for residents. Eventually, on your right, you’ll find the beginning of the trail marked by a small sign indicating the Heart Trail. Although shorter, this trail lacks shade, so in summer, make sure you have sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water. This path takes around 25-30 minutes.

Both trails lead to the Hermitage of Sant’Egidio, which offers a great view of Lake Scanno and the surrounding valley. From here, it’s just a short distance to the panoramic viewpoint. Follow the path to the left, keeping the hermitage behind you, and walk downhill until you reach a fountain. Pass through the open gate in front of the fountain and continue for a few minutes until you reach the viewpoint where you can see the heart-shaped Lake Scanno, called the “Heart Observatory.”

The hermitage, built in a rural Romanesque style, has a square façade with a small bell nook at the top. The entrance is topped by a small circular window, and the door’s lintel bears an inscription from 1675, the year the town prayed to Saint Egidio for help during the plague. Another inscription, inside a coat of arms above the entrance, mentions the date and names of the three local citizens who promoted the restoration in 1780. Inside, the single nave contains a simple altar with side niches, and near the entrance, there are two holy water fonts carved with animal-like faces. The fresco of Saint Egidio on the altar shows signs of age. The floor is made of simple bricks, and two doors on the right lead to the sacristy and living quarters, consisting of a ground-floor room and two upstairs chambers likely used by the hermit.

The exact date of the church’s construction is unknown, but records confirm the existence of the hermitage in 1612.

What to tell kids during their visit to Lake Scanno

Want to keep the kids engaged during their visit to Lake Scanno? Here are six cool stories perfect for captivating their imagination:

  1. After the 2009 earthquake not far from the lake, the water level dropped by 6 meters.
  2. Recently, weapons and ammunition from World War II were found resurfacing after almost seventy years.
  3. The hands of divers’ instruments forget to point north when they’re underwater, turning in different directions instead.
  4. Experts from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Rome were called in, and with special equipment, they monitored the deep and murky lakebed searching for magnetic signals. At a certain point, the magnetic signal changed slightly, which could indicate buried ferrous materials. In one specific part of the lake, a very concentrated, localized negative anomaly was detected. The coordinates suggest this object, estimated to be about six meters by two, is oval-shaped, oriented northeast, but no one knows what it is.
  5. Scanno’s traditional dessert, Pan dell’Orso, is tied to a legend. It’s said that in the fall, shepherds prepared to leave the village to take their flocks to warmer areas. Each carried a bag full of panelli, sweets made with honey and almonds. The scent of the honey attracted a big bear, which attacked a sheepfold and devoured all the panelli. From then on, the sweet became known as Pan dell’Orso. It’s made with flour, eggs, butter, almonds, Abruzzo honey, and flavored with vanilla. Over time, chocolate glaze was added, making it even more irresistible.
