We count this area as one, but it’s worth 18. These mills stand as a testament to an activity that accompanied human life for over two thousand years. They were a place of meeting and experience exchange for the inhabitants of nearby villages, and they represent a small yet significant treasure of artisanal architecture that still tells the story of a not-so-distant past. The mills of Alto Tordino, which play a prominent role in the historical and cultural heritage of the province of Teramo, number around 20. Just a few kilometers upstream from Teramo, you can rediscover the remains of this age-old activity that shaped human life and continued operating until the end of the last century. These ancient structures are perfectly nestled in a rare and beautiful natural setting, making them an ideal destination for a hike. However, most of the ancient mills, once the center of economic and social life, are now abandoned ruins, reachable only by mule tracks and steep paths.
