What to do in Abruzzo with kids

Abruzzo is a perfect destination for families, offering plenty of outdoor activities and a variety of places to explore that will delight both kids and adults alike. From mountain hikes to strolls through charming villages, every corner of this region is full of surprises. Here are some of the best hiking and nature experiences not to miss.
Hiking and nature for the whole family
Canoe trip on the Tirino River
Among Abruzzo’s hidden treasures, the Tirino River is one of those places that will leave you speechless. Its water is so clear that you can see every detail of the riverbed. The first time I visited, Matteo convinced me to try a canoe trip. Paddling on this crystal-clear water, surrounded by unspoiled nature, was a refreshing experience. The kids had a blast spotting fish and plants underwater, almost like we were in a live documentary. This adventure is not only fun but also educational, giving you a chance to discover a different side of Abruzzo, far from the usual beach destinations.
A picnic at high altitude in Campo Imperatore
If the rain is light, a walk through the historic center of Cesena will take you past medieval buildings, small squares, and hidden alleys. It feels like a journey back in time, with elegant architecture and picturesque views.
How to get to Campo Imperatore
Campo Imperatore is accessible from the A24 Rome-L’Aquila-Teramo motorway (exit 14), Assergi tollbooth. Then, continue to Fonte Cerreto, base of the Gran Sasso d’Italia Cable Car, and follow the signs (SS17 bis).
To reach the 2130 m altitude of the Campo Imperatore hotel, which is the mountain station of the ski lifts, once you arrive at Fonte Cerreto, you can take the cable car, which is the only access to the western part of the plateau in winter.
The road (SS17 bis) is closed to cars due to snow throughout the winter season.
In summer, you can drive up to the base of Campo Imperatore, and if you’re lucky, you can drive to the top. However, you’ll need to arrive early because the parking lot is small and fills up quickly.
Alternatively, you can park here (free parking) and take the chairlift (€5) – or hike along the short, but uphill trail.
You can reach Campo Imperatore either by ascending from Assergi via the Fossa di Paganica pass, from the medieval village of Castel del Monte via the Capo la Serra pass, or from Farindola via the Vado di Sole.
The peaks that surround and define the “Campo Imperatore” plateau are among the highest and most spectacular in the Apennines:
- Corno Grande (2,912 m)
- Monte Portella (2,385 m)
- Monte Aquila (2,494 m)
- Monte Prena (2,561 m)
- Monte Camicia (2,564 m)
- Monte Scindarella (2,237 m)

Gole del Sagittario: Villalago between waterfalls and trails
Finally, one of our favorite destinations is the Sagittario Gorge Nature Reserve. Here, nature is both powerful and mesmerizing. The trails that wind through the gorge transport you to an almost enchanted world, with waterfalls and lush vegetation. Every time we visit this corner of paradise, the kids are captivated by the clear waters flowing between the rocks. Beyond exploring, there’s also an educational trail that explains the area’s flora and fauna, a little adventure that makes the day even more special. Walking here feels like stepping into another dimension, far from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Educational and cultural activities
For us, traveling isn’t just about fun or vacations. We live on the road, and it’s essential for us to incorporate learning moments into our travels, where Aldo and Giulia can truly “study on the go.” Abruzzo is definitely the perfect classroom, offering an opportunity to discover the history, culture, and spirituality of a region.
Abruzzo is a place that provides endless opportunities for kids to experience educational and stimulating activities. Here are some stops you shouldn’t miss on your trip.
Eremo di San Bartolomeo: a dive into the spirituality of the mountains
Tucked away in the majestic mountains of the Majella National Park, the Hermitage of San Bartolomeo in Legio is one of those places that leaves a lasting impression. Its location, perched on a cliffside, offers a breathtaking view and an overwhelming sense of peace. We discovered it with the kids during one of our most memorable walks in Abruzzo. The atmosphere is unique: silence, interrupted only by the whisper of the wind and birdsong, accompanies the walk to the hermitage, where the little ones can imagine the life of the ancient monks.
How to reach the Hermitage of San Bartolomeo
The hermitage is located in the town of Roccamorice, in the province of Pescara. To reach it, you must follow the trail that starts from the parking area in Contrada Macchie di Coco. From there, a 40-minute walk will take you directly to the hermitage.
The path is also “suitable” for kids, but always bring water, comfortable shoes, and something to eat in case the kids aren’t great walkers!
Just to be clear, I want to mention that the walk to the hermitage is mostly flat and downhill, while the return is uphill. After the first shaded part, the rest of the walk is in the sun, so in the summer, I recommend avoiding the hottest hours. It’s not a complicated walk, but don’t forget to pack water!
From the hermitage, there are stairs that lead down to a river and some rocks from which you can see the hermitage in all its glory.
The trail continues to another hermitage, Santo Spirito, but I wouldn’t recommend continuing if you’re with kids, as it takes about 3.5 more hours!
However, Santo Spirito can be reached by car via a different route.
This hermitage is not accessible with strollers.

Alba Fucens: the ancient Roman city
In Alba Fucens, history comes to life. Over 300 years before Christ’s birth, this area was colonized by six thousand families sent by Rome to establish a presence in a strategic point of the peninsula that was being conquered. The name “Alba” refers to the elevated location, ranging from 300 to 1,000 meters above sea level.
Visiting this ancient Roman site is like traveling back two thousand years, exploring the remains of a city that was once a significant settlement of the Empire. Kids will be enchanted by the large amphitheater, which makes them feel like little gladiators, and the baths, which are remnants of a distant era. We’ve visited Alba Fucens in different seasons, and every time we discover new details among the ruins, as if the site continues to tell us new stories. My tip is to stay for the sunset: a truly unique spectacle!
How to reach Alba Fucens
Alba Fucens is located in the town of Massa d’Albe, in the province of L’Aquila. From Avezzano, the closest city, you just need to follow the SS5 north for about 15 minutes. The archaeological site is well signposted and easily accessible. For a complete visit, it’s recommended to hire a guide who can engage the kids with fun facts and stories about ancient Rome.
Stiffe Caves: a journey into the heart of the earth
The Stiffe Caves are a natural wonder, perfect for those seeking an exciting underground adventure. We explored them with our children, and from the moment we entered, the magical atmosphere of the rock formations and underground waterfalls captured their attention. It truly feels like stepping into the heart of the earth.
The stalactites and stalagmites, combined with the underground river, create a breathtaking scene that tells millions of years of geological history. The guides explain every detail, making the visit both educational and fun for the whole family.

Tickets and visiting hours for the Stiffe Caves
The Stiffe Caves are open every day with the following schedule:
- Summer hours (April 1st – October 15th): 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (Ticket office closes at 5:45 PM, with the last entry at 6:00 PM)
- Winter hours (October 16th – March 31st): 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Ticket office closes at 4:45 PM, with the last entry at 5:00 PM)
Ticket prices for the Stiffe Caves are:
- Full price: €12.00
- Reduced price (children aged 6 to 14, seniors over 70, and university students): €10.00
- Free entry for children under 6, people with disabilities (including an accompanying person), individuals with 100% disabilities (and their companion), and residents of San Demetrio ne’ Vestini.
The tickets include a one-hour guided tour and a safety helmet. It is recommended to wear appropriate clothing.
How to reach the Stiffe Caves
The Stiffe Caves are located in the town of San Demetrio ne’ Vestini, in the province of L’Aquila. To get there, follow the A24 Roma-L’Aquila motorway and take the L’Aquila Est exit. From there, follow the signs to San Demetrio ne’ Vestini and then to the caves. Parking is available near the cave entrance, and the visit is well-organized with guided tours lasting around one hour.
Costa dei Trabocchi: sea, history, and fun
Along the Abruzzo coastline, there’s a place that always brings joy to the whole family: the Costa dei Trabocchi. This stretch of coast is known for its ancient fishing structures, called trabocchi, which appear suspended between the sky and the sea, and for its beautiful beaches, perfect for family relaxation.
Exploring the area with kids is an experience that combines fun, history, and nature.
What makes the Costa dei Trabocchi special?
The Costa dei Trabocchi is not just a series of beaches; it’s an open-air museum. As you travel along the coast, you’ll come across the famous trabocchi, ancient wooden fishing platforms that tell stories of the sea and centuries-old traditions. The contrast between the wild nature and the rich history makes this part of Abruzzo a unique place where the sea and culture meet.
Trabocchi: historic fishing machines by the sea
The trabocchi are the soul of this coastline and were one of the first things I wanted to show the kids. These wooden structures, extending towards the sea, were once used for fishing but today serve as restaurants suspended above the water, where you can dine with the sound of waves in the background. Explaining to the kids how these “machines” worked is a great way to connect them to local history while giving them an unforgettable experience. Some trabocchi are open to visitors, and walking along these suspended walkways feels like stepping back in time.
How to reach the trabocchi
You can find the trabocchi along the coast between Ortona and Vasto. Many are easily accessible via the Via Verde, a cycling and walking path that follows the old railway line overlooking the sea. The ideal starting point is San Vito Chietino, from where you can start your adventure.

Beaches not to miss along the coast
The Costa dei Trabocchi also offers a series of family-friendly beaches where you can spend sunny days by the sea. One of my favorites is Punta Aderci, a nature reserve with an unspoiled beach and crystal-clear waters. Its dunes and lush vegetation make it a small corner of paradise. San Vito Beach is another must-see, with its rocky coves and shallow waters, perfect for children. Each beach along the coast has its own unique charm and is worth discovering!
How to reach the beaches
Punta Aderci is located near Vasto and is easily reachable by car, with parking available near the entrance to the reserve. From there, a short walk will lead you directly to the beach. San Vito Chietino is connected by a network of coastal roads, and the beaches can be accessed via small paths.
Family activities: cycling along the Via Verde
If there’s one activity that brings the whole family together on the Costa dei Trabocchi, it’s cycling along the Via Verde. This bike path runs along the disused railway line and offers breathtaking views of one of the most beautiful stretches of the Adriatic Sea, with the trabocchi standing out on the horizon. We love riding along the Via Verde, and each time we decide to explore different trabocchi and beaches, as they are all equally beautiful.
It’s an easy and fun excursion, ideal even for the little ones. You don’t need to be an expert cyclist to enjoy this ride; the path is flat and well-maintained.
What to see in Ortona
Ortona is a historic city that should definitely be part of your itinerary. In addition to being one of the main access points to the Costa dei Trabocchi, it’s famous for its impressive Aragonese Castle, which overlooks the city from above. Kids will be fascinated by its walls and towers, perfect for imagining little explorer adventures or even organizing a fun treasure hunt.
But Ortona also offers a long beach and a promenade by the port, where you can enjoy ice cream with a view of the sea. Another must-see is the Cathedral of St. Thomas, which houses the relics of the apostle Thomas, a historical attraction that will captivate the whole family.

I’ll start with the most famous, the most beautiful, and the one that literally stole my heart in every season! Maybe it’s because the first time I saw this castle, Giulia was just 5 days old, making her the youngest child to visit Rocca Calascio?
I’m obviously talking about the enchanting Rocca Calascio, probably one of the most iconic castles in Abruzzo. In addition to the most famous fortresses, Abruzzo is full of smaller, lesser-known castles, perfect for a day of exploration. One of these is Bominaco Castle, located in the heart of the region. This small castle, less crowded than its more famous “siblings,” is perfect for a peaceful visit with kids, who can explore the walls and pretend to be adventurers without too many tourists around. The nearby San Pellegrino Church is another hidden gem, with medieval frescoes that will leave everyone speechless.
Another castle not to be missed is the Piccolomini Castle in Capestrano, with its mysterious corners and spectacular panoramic view of the Tirino Valley. It’s a perfect destination for a family day out, where children can experience a real journey into the past.
How to reach these castles
The Piccolomini Castle in Capestrano is located in the Tirino Valley, accessible via the SS17. Here too, you’ll find parking near the castle, and from there you can explore both the fortress and the village.
- Il Castello Piccolomini di Capestrano si trova nella valle del Tirino, accessibile dalla SS17. Anche qui troverai parcheggi vicino al castello, e da lì potrai esplorare sia la fortezza che il borgo.
