Long Stopover at Singapore Airport with Kids
How We Survived (and Had Fun)
Welcome to our long stopover at Singapore Airport with the kids.
You know that moment when, after a 13-hour flight, you find yourself in one of the biggest airports in the world, with two kids completely exhausted… and still 9 hours to fill? We managed not to fall asleep on the carpets (almost) and turned those endless hours into an adventure. In this article, I’ll tell you what to do during a stopover at Singapore Airport with kids, how to get organized, and what to know before landing.
You’ll also find a super handy table with all the main attractions at Singapore Airport and info on where to find them
Why a Singapore Stopover Can Be an Amazing Experience (Even with Exhausted Kids)
A whole night to fill when, according to your kids’ body clocks, it’s the middle of the night? In many airports, this would be a nightmare. But not in Singapore. This place is a mix between a shopping mall, a theme park, and a botanical garden. With a bit of planning (and a lot of patience), it can become a stop your kids will remember.

Free City Tour: How It Works and Why It’s Worth It
We started our stopover with the Free Singapore Tour, a free excursion organized directly by the airport for anyone with at least a 5-hour layover.
Requirements to join the free Singapore tour
Requirements to join the free Singapore tour:
Stopover longer than 5 hours
Checked luggage already submitted
Flights operated by specific partner airlines (check the website)
Mandatory reservation in advance
Check here if you can join the free Singapore tour
We did it to keep the kids awake right after landing and to help their bodies adjust to the new time zone. Yes, they were completely exhausted. But they got to see temples, the skyline, and boats on the river… and they made it until late!
What to Do During a Stopover at Singapore Airport with Kids: Guide to Free Attractions
Singapore Changi Airport is basically an amusement park disguised as an airport. And no, I’m not exaggerating. There are so many things to do for free that you almost feel sorry when it’s time to leave.
Rain Vortex Waterfall (inside Jewel)
It’s the tallest indoor waterfall in the world: 40 meters of water cascading from the roof, surrounded by a real jungle. Every evening there’s also a free light and music show that amazes everyone.
📍 Located in the center of Jewel Changi Airport (accessible from all terminals, but you must pass immigration).
Canopy Park and Suspended Forest Trails
Although some attractions are paid (like trampolines and suspended bridges), most of the park is free. We walked among enormous plants and had an impromptu picnic on the giant beanbags.
Butterfly Garden
A small tropical oasis inside Terminal 3. It’s the first butterfly garden in any airport in the world, and entrance is free. The butterflies land on you and seem animated by the kids’ excitement.
Sunflower and Orchid Gardens
Two panoramic gardens, one with hundreds of sunflowers, the other with all kinds of orchids. Perfect for running around, smelling the flowers, and taking a green break.
Light and Sound Shows
Every evening there are light shows, dancing fountains, and projections on the walls of the Jewel, all completely free. If you can keep the kids awake until sunset, it’s worth it.
Relax Areas with Loungers and Runway Views
Each terminal has chill-out zones with super comfortable chairs and huge windows overlooking the runway. Perfect for drawing, playing with miniature planes, or simply closing your eyes for a moment.

24-Hour Cinema and Play Areas
Already mentioned, but worth repeating: the cinema is free, open 24/7, and shows family-friendly movies. Plus, there are small play areas everywhere, with carpets, slides, and soft play zones.
Interactive Digital Zones and Art Installations
In some terminals, you’ll find touchscreen stations, interactive LED walls, and digital games where kids can create virtual butterflies, draw, or play small educational games.
The Butterfly Garden: A Mini Tropical Jungle
A lush green pavilion filled with giant butterflies flying all around you. It feels like stepping into a greenhouse in the middle of the jungle. The kids were absolutely mesmerized.
Interactive Digital Zones and Art Installations (Yes, Again!)
Each terminal has its own version — from interactive touch walls to creative stations that keep little hands (and minds) busy. Perfect for when you need to kill time without resorting to screens.
Play Areas in Every Terminal
Changi isn’t an airport — it’s an adventure. There are mini sensory paths, interactive games, relax zones with reclining chairs, and open spaces filled with real plants. Each terminal has its own vibe, and we explored almost all of them.
Want a Shower or a Dip in the Pool? You Can (for a Fee)
There’s a rooftop swimming pool with a runway view, perfect if you still have energy left (we didn’t 😅).
Alternatively, you can just take a shower to freshen up. Both options are paid, but after a long-haul flight, they can make a huge difference.
Our Tips for Surviving a Long Stopover with Kids
Pack a small backpack with games, snacks, and a change of clothes
Set up a mini “schedule” so you don’t end up wandering aimlessly
Take advantage of the free city tour as soon as you can
Make time for breaks in quiet areas — even just to watch the planes
Accept that it won’t all go perfectly… but it can still be pretty amazing
